New Delhi, Aug 7 (UNI) The Disability Rights Group (DRG) staged a protest at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday, demanding accountability and bringing reforms following the death of 14 individuals with intellectual disabilities at the government-run Asha Kiran shelter home.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the severe issues at the facility, which has been scrutinised multiple times in the past.
In 2015, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) flagged Asha Kiran for being overburdened and inadequately prepared for medical emergencies. A 2017 report by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) further revealed deplorable conditions and neglect. Despite these warnings, no significant action has been taken.
Arman Ali, Convenor of the DRG, said, “Inmates in the facility have been dying for the past ten years. There is no action taken from the government’s end to ensure safe living conditions. A high-power committee needs to be set up under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister.”
Syamala G from Action for Ability Development and Inclusion (AADI) stated, “The allocation of resources needs to be strategic. We need to decentralise institutions, make them inclusive, and encourage greater participation.”
Radhika Alkazi of AASTHA India emphasised, “Asha Kiran is highly overcrowded, with no rehabilitation programmes. The system must change, and we will not stop until that change happens.”
Shanti Auluck from Muskaan added, “People are willing to help, yet such apathy persists. We hope society and the government realise that those who need our support the most are being neglected.”
The DRG has outlined key demands including a thorough investigation into the deaths, a comprehensive review of the facility, and better medical provisions. They also called for increased funding for foster homes and improved collaboration across government departments to enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities.
