New Delhi, Aug 16 (UNI) Amid the ongoing nationwide protest over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, doctors in Delhi on Friday attempted to march to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at Nirman Bhawan to demand justice but were halted by police barricades.
Resident doctors of AIIMS, RML, Safdarjung, Lady Hardinge and several other hospitals were seen holding posters and banners, chanting slogans like ‘We want justice’ and ‘No safety, no duty’ outside Nirman Bhawan.
The demonstration, which has entered its fifth day, has led to the suspension of all elective services, though emergency services and OPDs remain functional.
Speaking to UNI, a surgeon of a central government hospital said, “We are morally supporting the resident doctors in their protest. As per guidelines from the ministry, central government hospitals cannot shut all of their services, and we do not want to do that. However, we are supporting our resident doctors.”
“They have been protesting since 9 a.m. this morning. We stand with them, but we are also ensuring that emergency services continue to function normally. Additionally, patient care services and OPDs will not be disrupted, although all elective services remain suspended,” he added.
