Brisbane, Dec 17 (UNI) Tennis fans are in for a treat as Novak Djokovic will kick off his 2025 season by teaming up with Nick Kyrgios in doubles at the Brisbane International.
The tournament marks Djokovic’s return to the ATP 250 event in Australia after 15 years, as he continues his pursuit of a historic 100th career singles title.
This will also be a much-anticipated comeback for Kyrgios, who has been sidelined by injuries and has played just one competitive match in the past two years. The Australian, who last triumphed at the Brisbane International in 2018, is returning to action on home soil after an 18-month absence.
Though organisers are yet to officially confirm the high-profile doubles pairing, Kyrgios sparked excitement by posting an Instagram story on 16 December, featuring a photo of himself with Djokovic, captioned, “Doubles at Brisbane. See y’all there.”
The two players share a storied history, including a meeting in the 2022 Wimbledon final where Djokovic claimed a four-set victory to secure his seventh title at SW19 and his 21st Grand Slam.
Despite this, Kyrgios leads their head-to-head rivalry 2-1, having won both of their encounters in 2017.
The Brisbane International, scheduled from 29 December to 5 January 2025, will serve as an early-season proving ground for Djokovic, who begins the year with a new coach, former rival and two-time Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray.
As tennis returns to the city set to host the 2032 Olympics, the tournament is expected to draw significant attention, particularly with the Djokovic-Kyrgios partnership adding a new dimension to an already star-studded field.
Fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how the collaboration between the Serbian great and the charismatic Australian unfolds on the court.
