Distribution of 25 mn free Ujjwala LPG connections a boost to women’s empowerment: PM Modi

New Delhi, Sep 22 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the Government’s decision to distribute 25 million new free Ujjwala LPG connections will further empower women across the country.

Responding to a post on social media platform X by union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, the Prime Minister emphasised that the initiative reflects the government’s deep respect for women, akin to the reverence for Goddess Durga.

“Through this step of ours, not only will they experience new joy on this sacred festival, but our commitment to women’s empowerment will also gain further strength,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Earlier, Puri had announced on social media that the government will provide 25 million additional free LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), taking the total number of beneficiary families to 106 million.

He added that the government is investing Rs 2,050 per connection, enabling beneficiaries to receive not only free LPG cylinders but also gas stoves and regulators at no cost.

“This decision further reinforces our commitment to honouring and empowering mothers and sisters across the nation. The Ujjwala family now comprises an impressive 106 million beneficiaries,” said Puri.

Since its inception, the Ujjwala Yojana has emerged as one of India’s most impactful social welfare schemes, serving as a shining example of women’s empowerment. The initiative has brightened not just countless kitchens but also the lives and futures of millions of mothers and sisters across the country, Puri added.

More than a government scheme, Ujjwala has become a catalyst for change, reaching the remotest corners of India. Currently, with a Rs 300 subsidy provided by the Modi government, over 103 million Ujjwala families refill their LPG cylinders at an affordable rate of just Rs 553 — a price lower than that in many LPG-producing nations worldwide.
