Mumbai/New Delhi, Nov 24 (UNI) Bollywood has lost one of its most beloved and enduring stars, Dharmendra, affectionately called the “He-Man of Indian Cinema,” who passed away peacefully at his residence in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 89.
The veteran actor, who had been battling age-related health issues, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy spanning over six decades and more than 300 films.
Born on December 8, 1935, in Sahnewal, Punjab, Dharmendra made his acting debut in 1960 with ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’. Over the years, he became a household name, charming audiences with his versatility — from romantic leads to action heroes and comic roles.
His memorable performances in classics like ‘Sholay’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Phool Aur Patthar’, and ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ have cemented his place in Indian cinematic history.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of the Bollywood star of the 1960s and 1970s and described him as “an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played.”
“The passing of Dharmendra Ji marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people. Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister said in a post on handle X.
Dharmendra’s contributions were recognised with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2012 and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. His charismatic screen presence and dedication to his craft made him an inspiration to generations of actors and fans.
The actor’s declining health had been a cause for concern in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Dharmendra was hospitalized at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital due to acute respiratory complications and required ventilator support.
Despite his discharge on November 12, rumors about his health circulated widely, causing distress among family, fans, and the film fraternity. His daughter, Esha Deol, and wife, Hema Malini, publicly condemned the spread of false news regarding his passing earlier this month.
On Monday, heightened security was observed at Dharmendra’s Juhu residence and the Pawan Hans crematorium, with family members and celebrities visiting amid growing anxiety. His children, Esha and Sunny Deol, were seen visibly distressed.
Actors and film personalities who were seen at his residence includes Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and his father Salim Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor and Zayed Khan.
As the nation mourns the loss of Dharmendra, his legacy as a pioneering actor and beloved cultural icon continues to shine brightly, reminding India of the golden era of cinema he helped shape.
