Dense fog delays 50 trains in Delhi Division; Railways enforce speed curbs

New Delhi, Dec 20 (UNI) As dense fog engulfed the entire northern region, 50 trains were delayed by several hours according to the Delhi Division of Indian Railways.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a fog warning for some parts of Uttar Pradesh.
“Dense to very dense fog conditions very likely in some parts of Uttar Pradesh till morning hours of 21 December 2025,” the post on department’s X handle stated.
Speaking to the UNI, Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, stated that around 50 trains under the Delhi division were delayed today due to dense fog.
Stating that safety steps are being followed to ensure that no untoward incident happens due to poor visibility, the CPRO said that the loco pilots have been instructed to reduce the speed of the trains to not exceed beyond 75 km/hr.
“Pre watering stops have been added along with the food catering staff at the railways stations being asked to be operational round the clock,” he said.
Indian Railways has deployed Fog PASS devices to assist loco pilots in safely operating trains during foggy weather conditions, particularly in fog-prone sections of the network. Fog PASS is a GPS-based, handheld portable device that is not installed on the locomotive but is carried by loco pilots while on duty.
The device supports train operations during low visibility by providing audio-visual alerts whenever a train approaches a predefined landmark within a geo-fenced range. Key operational points such as stations, signals, warning boards, level crossing gates and whistle-for-level-crossing (W/L) boards are pre-fed into the system for each section.
In addition, the Fog PASS device displays the locomotive’s speed, as well as the distance and estimated time to reach upcoming landmarks, enabling crews to maintain situational awareness even in dense fog. As of now, Indian Railways has provided a total of 12,205 Fog PASS devices across its network to enhance safety during foggy weather operations.
Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw while addressing the parliament had spoken about the provision of GPS-based Fog Safety Device (FSD) to loco pilots in fog-affected areas, enabling loco pilots to know the distance of the approaching landmarks like signals, level-crossing gates, which helps to prevent accidents.
