Delhi Zoo celebrates World Wildlife Day, hosts awareness drive for schoolchildren

New Delhi, Mar 3 (UNI) The National Zoological Park celebrated World Wildlife Day 2026 on Tuesday by organising a marathon and a tug of war competition inside the zoo premises to promote awareness about conservation, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Environment.

Marking the occasion, 110 students from CRPF Montessori School were invited to the zoo for an awareness programme. A guided educational tour was arranged, during which students were introduced to various animal species, their habitats and conservation initiatives undertaken by zoo authorities.

The tour gave students an opportunity to engage closely with nature and understand the importance of wildlife in maintaining ecological balance.

Held under the motto ‘Each Step Towards Wildlife Conservation’, the marathon encouraged participants to dedicate every stride to the protection and preservation of nature.

The ministry said more than 200 staff members and workers took part in the morning events, showing unity and commitment towards wildlife conservation. The marathon route passed through key areas of the park, symbolising harmony between fitness and the natural world.

The tug of war competition reflected teamwork and collective strength, reinforcing the message of safeguarding wildlife and preserving biodiversity for future generations.

Addressing the gathering, the zoo’s Director highlighted the vital role wildlife plays in daily life, from sustaining food chains and enabling pollination to supporting medicinal plants and environmental sustainability.

Experts and zoo educators also interacted with the students, encouraging them to become responsible citizens and advocates for wildlife protection.
