Delhi water minister orders strict checks to prevent drinking water contamination

New Delhi, Jan 6 (UNI) Delhi Water Minister Pravesh Verma has directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to intensify monitoring and take immediate steps to prevent any contamination of the city’s drinking water supply.

In an official communication, the minister said DJB is already carrying out regular inspections of water pipelines and monitoring water quality as per established norms. However, considering the importance of ensuring safe and clean drinking water for residents, further strict measures have been ordered on an urgent and regular basis.

As per the directions, DJB has been asked to increase inspections of all water supply pipelines, especially in areas where drinking water lines run close to sewer lines. The aim is to quickly detect and repair leaks, damages, or any possible points of cross-contamination.

The minister has also instructed DJB to strengthen continuous water quality monitoring at water treatment plants, distribution zones, and at consumer ends through frequent sampling and testing.

Officials have been directed to ensure prompt action on public complaints related to water quality, including issues of odour, taste, or discoloration. On-ground verification and corrective measures must be taken in the shortest possible time.

The order also calls for periodic infrastructure audits to identify vulnerable sections of the water supply network and prioritise repairs or replacements to prevent the mixing of untreated water or external contaminants.

In addition, DJB has been told to deploy dedicated teams for round-the-clock vigilance and maintenance in high-density and vulnerable areas.

The minister said all these measures must be implemented with immediate effect and closely monitored by the CEO of DJB, including regular reviews of inspections, complaint resolution, and water quality test results.
