Delhi Jal Board approves Rs 917 crore projects to upgrade sewage plants, curb Yamuna pollution

New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) today approved three major projects worth a combined Rs 917 crore to upgrade and expand sewage treatment plants (STPs) across the capital, aiming to reduce pollution in the Yamuna River.

The decisions were taken during the board’s meeting, chaired by Delhi’s Water Minister.

The largest project, costing Rs 403 crore, will increase the capacity of the Yamuna Vihar Phase-III STP from 25 to 40 million gallons per day (MGD) and construct a new 15 MGD plant at Yamuna Vihar Phase-IV. The upgraded facilities will comply with the latest Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and National Green Tribunal (NGT) standards.

Another Rs 133.33 crore has been allocated to expand the Keshopur Phase-I STP from 12 MGD to 18 MGD, while a Rs 381 crore plan will upgrade five other plants—Vasant Kunj (Phases I and II), Ghitorni, Mehrauli, and Okhla Phase-V—adding a combined 15.5 MGD capacity. All projects include long-term operation and maintenance contracts ranging from 11 to 12 years.

The moves come amid persistent concerns over untreated wastewater flowing into the Yamuna, despite previous upgrades. Environmental experts have stressed that sustained monitoring and stricter enforcement of standards will be key to ensuring the projects deliver tangible results.
