New Delhi, Feb 10 (UNI) Delhi Government on Tuesday appointed cricketer Shikhar Dhawan as the Brand Ambassador for the ‘Delhi Khel Mahakumbh’, a major sports initiative aimed at promoting grassroots talent across the national capital.
The announcement was made after Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood met Dhawan in the presence of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The Delhi Khel Mahakumbh is scheduled to commence from February 13.
Speaking after the meeting, Sood said Dhawan voluntarily agreed to take on the responsibility after witnessing the Delhi Government’s commitment towards strengthening sports infrastructure and encouraging youth participation in sports.
He added that Dhawan accepted the role wholeheartedly to motivate children and young people of Delhi to pursue sports and excel at higher levels.
The Chief Minister expressed her gratitude to the cricketer and appreciated his willingness to contribute towards nurturing sporting talent in the capital.
“The Delhi Government feels proud to welcome an extremely successful sportsperson and inspirational personality like Shikhar Dhawan. Staying connected to his roots, he has taken a pledge to take Delhi’s players forward,” Sood said.
Officials said Dhawan will remain associated with the event from the inaugural ceremony through its entire duration, encouraging and motivating participating athletes.
Sood further said the government is confident that under Dhawan’s guidance and inspiration, young players of Delhi will gain new energy, self-confidence and recognition.
Expressing happiness, Shikhar Dhawan said he was honoured to be appointed Brand Ambassador of the Delhi Khel Mahakumbh.
“Delhi has given me so much. I am always ready to serve this soil. I am very happy that the Delhi Government has taken such a wonderful initiative and created a strong platform for the youth so that our young players can perform well and excel in sports. Whatever I can contribute, I will give my full effort and extend complete support to the players,” he said.
