- BLOs will get changes in identity card and VIS
Bhopal – In a significant move to enhance transparency and voter convenience, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has rolled out three major initiatives aimed at streamlining the electoral process and improving the accuracy of voter lists.
One of the key reforms involves the direct integration of death registration data from the Registrar General of India into the electoral system. This digital data exchange will allow Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) to receive timely notifications of registered deaths under Rule 9 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960 and the amended Section 3(5)(b) of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will now be empowered to verify deceased voters through field visits without waiting for formal Form-7 submissions, thereby accelerating the process of updating electoral rolls.
Additionally, to foster greater trust and ensure smoother interactions with citizens, the ECI has decided to issue official photo ID cards to all BLOs. This initiative, under Section 13B(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, will help voters identify and trust BLOs as they go door-to-door for verification and updates.
