Court grants bail to 26 arrested over Leh violence

Srinagar, Oct 2 (UNI) A local court in Leh granted interim bail to 26, including two migrant labourers from Bihar, who were arrested in connection with the recent violent unrest in the region.

Nearly 50 people were arrested by police following protests in Leh over demands for greater autonomy and statehood, during which clashes erupted that left four people dead and over 100 injured.

The clashes erupted on day 15 of a hunger strike led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been booked under the National Security Act and sent to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan.

The bail was granted by the court yesterday.

The president of the Bar Association, Leh, Mohammad Shafi Lassu, said the court granted interim bail to 26 detainees.

“We had moved bail applications for 40 people who were taken into custody. Out of them, 26 have been granted interim bail and are expected to walk free today as the court order was issued late evening,” Lassu told UNI.

The court has directed those released to appear again on October 4.

Life is slowly limping back to normalcy in Leh, with curfew relaxation extended to eight hours yesterday.

The interim bail comes a day after the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), which have been spearheading an agitation for the last four years, said it will not talk to the Ministry of Home Affairs until normal life is restored in Ladakh and those detained are released.
