Bhopal: Rekha Singh, the wife of martyr Deepak Singh, who laid down his life in the Galwan Valley on 15 June 2020, has turned tragedy into inspiration by becoming a lieutenant in the Indian Army. Her journey stands as a powerful testament to courage, perseverance, and women empowerment.

A resident of Fareda village in Rewa district, Rekha Singh faced immense personal loss just 15 months after her marriage. Her husband, posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, left behind a legacy that Rekha vowed to carry forward. With the support of the Madhya Pradesh government—including Rs 1 crore financial aid and an appointment as Shiksha Karmi Class-II—she began rebuilding her life.

Turned her dream into a mission

Once a teacher at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Sirmaur, Rekha had dreamed of joining the army, inspired by her husband. After his martyrdom, she turned that dream into a mission. Despite failing in her first attempt, she succeeded the second time and was commissioned as a lieutenant after a year of training in Chennai. In a poignant turn of events, she has now been posted in the same region where her husband sacrificed his life.

Rekha Singh says her achievement aims to inspire other women to join the forces and challenge societal conservatism. Her success story has been supported by the Rewa District Administration and District Sainik Welfare Office, who guided her throughout the selection process.

Her story proves that with resilience and determination, even the harshest challenges can be transformed into triumph.
