Constables Saurabh Arya and Santosh Bamaniya, accused in engineer’s murder held together in jail

Both claim innocence amid mounting evidence

Bhopal: Constables Saurabh Arya and Santosh Bamaniya, accused of murdering 20-year-old software engineer Udit Gayki, have been lodged together in the A-block ward of Central Jail, Bhopal. They are being housed together for security reasons. Since their admission to the jail on Sunday night, Arya has remained silent, while Bamaniya is reportedly behaving normally.

Both accused were produced in court earlier on Sunday wearing masks and were sent to judicial custody. They were later transferred to jail under tight security. During preliminary questioning by jail officials, both constables denied the murder charge, claiming they only used limited force on Udit’s lower back.

The incident occurred on Thursday night, when the constables, posted at Piplani police station area, allegedly beat Udit with sticks. A video of the assault has since gone viral. Udit, who was the brother-in-law of DSP Ketan Adlak, fell unconscious after the beating. He was taken to AIIMS by his friends, where he was declared dead. He succumbed to severe injuries on 16 parts of his body, including fatal trauma to the pancreas.

Following the incident, both constables were suspended on Friday. A murder case was registered on Saturday night, leading to their arrest. However, controversy surrounds the FIR filed at Piplani police station, as it reportedly omits any reference to police involvement in the beating.

The case has sparked public outrage, raising concerns about custodial violence and accountability within the police force.
