New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh today strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, accusing him of demonstrating “extreme moral cowardice” and “unconditional praise” for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Ramesh expressed his disappointment on social media platform X, saying, “The Prime Minister has welcomed the new developments regarding Gaza and praised President Trump. His eagerness to do so is not surprising. But what is truly shocking, shameful, and morally reprehensible is Prime Minister Modi’s unconditional praise for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu — who has been carrying out a massacre in Gaza for the past twenty months.”
The Congress leader further criticized PM Modi for maintaining complete silence on the future of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, which India recognized in November 1988 and which more than 150 countries have recognized today. He also pointed out the PM’s silence on the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
“PM Modi has also maintained complete silence on the future of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state. Similarly, Prime Minister Modi has said nothing about the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank,” Ramesh stated.
The criticism comes amid ongoing tensions in Gaza, where the Palestinian death toll has reached alarming numbers. The Congress has repeatedly questioned the Modi government’s silence on the Gaza crisis, with party leaders accusing the government of prioritizing its relationship with Israel over the welfare of Palestinians. Sonia Gandhi, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson, had earlier criticized India’s silence on Israel’s devastation in Gaza and Iran, saying it reflects a “disturbing departure from our moral and diplomatic traditions.”
