Congress seeks ban on electro-homoeopathy courses

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee’s Chairman of the Department of Ideas, Bhupendra Gupta, has written to the Governor demanding an immediate ban on the Electro-Homoeopathy courses being run by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hindi University. Gupta alleged that these unrecognised courses have led to a dangerous rise in illegal medical practices, resulting in several deaths across the state.

Addressing a press conference, Gupta said that students completing these courses often hold only Class 10 or 12 qualifications but are practising as private doctors. “Hundreds of such cases have come to light, where unqualified practitioners are endangering lives,” he stated. Gupta reminded that on 26 March 2025, he had already cautioned both the state government and the Governor regarding the legality of these courses, but no action had been taken even after six months.

According to Gupta, the state assembly itself, in response to Question No. 1047, confirmed that neither the courses are recognised nor has any official council or legislation been formed to regulate them. Yet, the university continues to run them. He alleged that several people have lost their lives due to treatment administered by these so-called electro-homoeopaths.

Gupta further accused the university of refusing to share details under the Right to Information Act, including information about faculty and inspection reports of study centres. He claimed this points to the institution’s complicity in shielding those running illegal clinics.

Citing a case from Khandwa district, where two children reportedly died after being treated by an electro-homoeopathy practitioner, Gupta said even health officials tried to withhold related information, calling it a “violation of privacy”.

He urged the Governor, as the Chancellor of all state universities, to impose an immediate ban on such courses and initiate legal action against officials involved. Gupta also demanded investigations by the CBI, Lokayukta or EOW into the alleged corruption in study centre allocations. He warned that the government’s inaction could lead to a tragedy akin to the infamous syrup scam.
