New Delhi, March 22 (UNI) The Congress on Sunday announced its fifth list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, finalising nominees for several constituencies as part of its ongoing effort to consolidate its organisational readiness ahead of the state polls.
In a statement issued by AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal, the party said the Central Election Committee has approved a fresh set of names for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for 2026, marking another step in its phased candidate selection process.
The latest list includes Joseph Hasda from Gossaigaon, Birkhang Boro from Dotma (ST), Rajat Kanti Saha from Bijni, Anchula Gwara Daimary from Bhergaon, Narayan Adhikari from Mazbat, Nirmal Langthasa from Haflong (ST) and Amar Chand Jain from Katigorah.
Party insiders said the selection reflects a mix of community representation and regional balancing as the Congress attempts to strengthen its presence across both tribal-dominated and non-tribal constituencies in Assam. The inclusion of candidates from Scheduled Tribe reserved seats such as Dotma and Haflong is seen as part of the party’s strategy to rebuild its support base among indigenous communities in the state.
The announcement comes at a time when political activity in Assam is gradually intensifying, with parties beginning to firm up their electoral strategies for the upcoming polls. The Congress, which has been working to regain ground in the state, has been releasing its candidate lists in phases, suggesting a detailed constituency-wise assessment by its leadership.
The party’s Central Election Committee, which finalised the names, is understood to have taken into account local organisational feedback, caste and community equations, and the electoral performance of previous elections while preparing the list.
With the latest release, the Congress has now unveiled multiple batches of candidates for Assam, indicating that the party is moving closer to completing its full slate for the Assembly elections. Further announcements are expected in the coming days as it finalises nominees for remaining constituencies.
Party sources said the focus remains on building a competitive electoral structure capable of challenging rival formations in a politically diverse and closely contested state
