Bhopal: Congress legislators, led by Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar, staged a symbolic protest in the Assembly premises on the third day of the Budget Session, accusing the state government of plunging Madhya Pradesh into unsustainable debt.
Gathering before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the MLAs carried empty piggy banks and placards bearing slogans against the government’s economic policies. They alleged that the administration was masking the state’s fragile financial condition through “statistical jugglery”. Singhar claimed that the total debt burden had crossed Rs 5 lakh crore, exceeding the state budget. He further criticised the government for securing an additional Rs 5,600 crore loan ahead of the Budget Session, calling it evidence of reckless borrowing.
Describing the piggy bank as a symbol of the public treasury, he alleged that taxpayers’ money was being squandered while ordinary citizens struggled under inflation. He also termed the Economic Survey “a bundle of falsehoods” and demanded a White Paper on the state’s actual financial position.
