Congress announces Third List of candidates for Assam assembly polls ‎

‎New Delhi, March 19 (UNI) ‎The Congress on Thursday released its third list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, naming 22 nominees across key constituencies in the state as part of its early electoral strategy.

‎In a press statement issued today the party said its Central Election Committee had finalized candidates representing a mix of experienced leaders and new faces. The announcement marks the beginning of the Congress party’s campaign push in Assam, where it is seeking to strengthen its position in a politically competitive landscape.

‎Among the prominent candidates announced are Manik Chandra Brahma from Kokrajhar (ST), Sapali Marak from Baokhungri, and Md Ashraful Islam Sheikh from Parbatjhora. The party has also fielded Baby Begum from Dhubri, Aftab Uddin Mollah from Jaleshwar, and Pradip Sarkar from Abhayapuri.

‎In constituencies with significant tribal representation, the Congress has nominated candidates such as Matilal Narzary from Sidli-Chirang (ST), Jagadish Madahi from Baksa (ST), Rafie Daimary from Tamulpur (ST), and Soren Daimari from Udalguri (ST). Other notable candidates include Asif Mohamad Nazar from Laharighat and Durlav Chamua from Nagaon-Batadraba.

‎The list further includes Sunil Chetry from Naduar, Joyonto Khaund from Rongonadi, Ghana Buragohain from Lakhimpur, and Ananda Narah from Dhakuakhana (ST). In upper Assam and Barak Valley regions, the party has named Sibanath Chetia from Makum, Roselina Tirkey from Khumtai, Sanjeeb Teron from Howraghat (ST), and Zubair Anam Mazumder from Algapur-Katlicherra.

‎The candidate selection reflects the party’s attempt to balance caste, community, and regional representation, a key factor in Assam’s complex electoral dynamics. The state has historically witnessed multi-cornered contests involving national and regional parties, making candidate selection a critical component of campaign strategy.

‎The Assam Assembly elections are expected to see intense competition, with the Congress aiming to regain political ground and challenge its rivals by focusing on local issues, governance, and inclusive representation. The release of the first list signals that the party is gearing up to mount an aggressive campaign in the run-up to the polls.
