Congress accuses MP govt of extravagance, rising debt burden

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the BJP government, accusing it of plunging the State into debt while wasting public money on political events and foreign tours. He claimed that the debt burden in Madhya Pradesh has reached Rs 60,000 per capita, with the government allegedly borrowing Rs 165 crore every day even as ordinary citizens struggle to afford basic necessities.

Targeting state Chief Minister , Patwari charged that the government’s grand events were being funded through borrowed money. “This government delivers lofty speeches, but in reality, it takes loans to organise political programmes. The microphones, tents and mobilised crowds — all are paid for with borrowed funds. The Chief Minister holds events daily, yet turns a blind eye to the plight of the people,” he said.

Referring to the Chief Minister’s recent foreign visits, Patwari alleged that Rs 34 crore had been spent on three international trips — an average of nearly Rs 3 crore per day. “What kind of State are they building where farmers suffer for fair prices while the government borrows money to tour foreign countries? The BJP government spends Rs 25 lakh daily on helicopter flights. If this is not political extravagance, what is?” he asked.

Patwari also contrasted the Chief Minister’s decision to conduct his son’s wedding in a mass marriage ceremony with what he termed the government’s “lavish” expenditure abroad. He added that the government itself had admitted, in response to questions raised by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, that Rs 34 crore was spent on the three trips — “a clear indication that political luxury, not public welfare, is the BJP’s priority.”
