Congress accuses BJP Govt of pushing Madhya Pradesh into debt trap

By Special Correspondent

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee president, Jeetu Patwari, has launched a scathing attack on the BJP government, alleging that it has completely dismantled financial discipline and driven the state into a deep debt crisis. He claimed that the government is now compelled to borrow afresh merely to pay interest on existing loans.

Debt surpasses ₹4.35 lakh crore

According to official figures, the state’s debt stood at ₹3.75 lakh crore in March 2024. By March 2025, this had risen to ₹4.21 lakh crore, and by July 2025, relentless borrowing pushed the figure to ₹4.35 lakh crore. Patwari noted that former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan left nearly ₹4 lakh crore debt behind, and now Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is following the same path, adding fresh loans every month.

Loans to pay interest

The annual interest liability on the current debt is estimated at ₹29,700 crore. Patwari argued that BJP’s flawed policies have crippled the state’s economy, forcing it into a cycle of “borrowing to repay borrowings.”

162-day borrowing spree

Between April and September 2025, the BJP government allegedly borrowed more than ₹25,000 crore — averaging ₹154 crore per day and ₹1,078 crore per week.

Debt burden on citizens

With a population of 8 crore, each citizen now bears a debt of around ₹54,375.

Patwari demanded answers from the government, asking who will ultimately repay this mounting debt and why ordinary citizens must shoulder the burden of BJP leaders’ politics of luxury and mismanagement.
