Indore: The Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee on Sunday organised a massive and emotive “Nyay Yatra” in Indore to protest the deaths of 21 residents and the illness of thousands allegedly caused by contaminated drinking water in the Bhagirathpura area. Describing the incident as a grave case of administrative negligence, the party demanded accountability from the BJP-led state government and civic authorities.
The march began at Bada Ganpati Square and concluded at Rajbada Square, where participants paid homage at the statue of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar. Large numbers of women, youth and local residents joined the procession, holding placards and raising slogans against what they termed the government’s insensitivity and failure to ensure safe drinking water.
Senior Congress leaders, including MP Congress in-charge Harish Chaudhary, state Congress president Jeetu Patwari, Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar, former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh and several MPs, MLAs and party office-bearers, participated in the yatra. Protesters demanded the immediate resignation of senior minister Kailash Vijayvargiya and the registration of an FIR against the Indore Mayor.
Addressing the gathering, Chaudhary said access to clean air and safe water were the most basic human needs, and alleged that the BJP government had failed on both counts. Patwari termed the tragedy a damning indictment of decades-long BJP rule in the state and the Indore Municipal Corporation, calling the deaths “unforgivable”.
Singhar questioned the government’s priorities, while Digvijaya Singh said the Congress would take the issue door to door to ensure justice. Party leaders unanimously declared that the Nyay Yatra was not merely a tribute to the deceased but a pledge to secure punishment for the guilty and prevent such incidents in future.
