Coach Khalid Jamil sets tone for India at CAFA Cup

Bengaluru, Aug 25 (UNI) “No excuses, only teamwork” — that is the mantra Indian men’s football head coach Khalid Jamil has set for the Blue Tigers as they gear up for the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 in Tajikistan, beginning August 29.

Formally introduced to the media here today by AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President NA Haris and Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan, Jamil underlined adaptability, professionalism and collective spirit as the foundation of India’s challenge in the Central Asian tournament.

“For me, there is no excuse. Everyone is working hard. We will play as a team, adapt with whoever is available, and give opportunities for new players to prove themselves,” he declared, signalling a no-compromise approach as India face tough Group B rivals.

Jamil, who has overseen a ten-day preparatory camp in Bengaluru, said belief and unity would be vital when India take on hosts Tajikistan, Asian giants Iran and Afghanistan. “They are strong sides and have done well recently. But we must focus on our own game and be mentally prepared. Juniors must also be groomed alongside seniors to build a strong future,” he noted.

The coach stressed that the squad’s mix of experienced leaders and emerging talent is key. Senior campaigners Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Sandesh Jhingan and Lallianzuala Chhangte will anchor the side, while promising youngsters like Irfan Yadwad and Vikram Partap Singh have been handed opportunities.

“The players are professionals. Once they enter the ground, they are focussed. For me, there is no excuse,” Jamil repeated, underscoring his belief in discipline and accountability.

India will depart for Tajikistan in the early hours of August 26 for final preparations ahead of their opener against the hosts on August 29 at the Hisor Central Stadium. The Blue Tigers will then face Iran on September 1 and Afghanistan on September 4. The group winners will advance to the final in Tashkent, while the second-placed teams will play for third place.

Group A of the tournament features Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan and Oman.
