Tianjin/New Delhi, Aug 31 (UNI) Chinese President Xi Jinping told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that China and India are cooperation partners, not rivals, and that the two countries are each other’s development opportunities rather than threats.
President Xi made the remarks when the two leaders met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, Xinhua reported.
In his opening remarks during the delegation-level talks with PM Narendra Modi, the Chinese President said, referring to their meeting in October last year: “Last year you and I had a successful meeting in Kazan and the China-India relations have started anew.
“The two sides have adhered to the understandings agreed and our bilateral extensive cooperation has made new progress.”
The Chinese President said that the dragon and the elephant must come together. “It is the right choice for both countries to be friends who have good neighbourly and amicable ties, partners who enable each other’s success, and to have the dragon and the elephant come together.”
Referring to the global situation, the Chinese President said the world is swept by “transformations” and the “international situation is both fluid and chaotic”. “China and India are two ancient civilizations in the East. We both shoulder the historical responsibility of improving the well-being of our people, promoting solidarity.”
Remarking on the diplomatic relations, he said that this year marks the 75th anniversary of their ties. “Both nations need to approach and handle our relationship from a strategic height and long-term perspective, so as to realise the sustained, sound and steady advancement of our bilateral ties.”
