Celebrating tribal dance and culture at Tribal Museum

Bhopal: As part of the cultural initiative Sambhavna, the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum hosted vibrant performances on July 6, 2025, showcasing traditional tribal dances. The event featured Ahirai dance by Shri Kamlesh Namdev and his team from Narsinghpur, and Gudumbaja dance by Shri Lekhpal Dhurve and his companions from Dindori.

Ahirai is a male-dominated folk dance of the Ahir community, performed especially on the second day of Diwali. On this day, the Yaduvanshi Ahirs worship a model of Govardhan mountain and their traditional weapons. The dance begins with rhythmic couplets and proverbs sung in chorus, followed by synchronized group movements.

Gudumbaja, on the other hand, is a traditional dance of the Dhuliya sub-caste of the Gond tribe. It is performed during marriages and special ceremonies, accompanied by instruments like Gudum, Dhaaf, Manjira, Shehnai, and Timki.

The Sambhavna program, held every Sunday at 2 p.m., provides audiences a glimpse into the rich art traditions of Madhya Pradesh and beyond, promoting cultural appreciation and awareness.
