CBI exposes evidence tampering in Vimal Negi Case, pen drive data deleted at Sadar Police Station

Shimla, Sep 19 (UNI) In a startling revelation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has unearthed strong evidence of tampering with a crucial pen drive linked to the mysterious death of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Chief Engineer, Vimal Negi.

The probe has confirmed that data on the pen drive was deliberately deleted inside Shimla’s Sadar police station.

According to the CBI’s investigation report submitted to the court, CCTV footage from March 21 shows ASI Pankaj Sharma inserting the pen drive into a police station computer between 8:07 am and 8:20 am, and opening files.

The agency alleges that Sharma deliberately destroyed sensitive data to shield those who allegedly abetted Negi’s suicide.

The pen drive, later seized by the SIT on April 15, was found to have been formatted during forensic testing. The CBI maintains that more than one person was part of the conspiracy and has cited incriminating details recovered from ASI Sharma’s mobile data during his custody.

Adding to suspicions, Sharma initially gave written consent in Delhi to undergo a polygraph and narco test, but retracted before the court, allegedly to delay the investigation.

The CBI also revealed discrepancies in the recovery of belongings from Negi’s body, which was found in the Sutlej River on March 18.

While cash and a driver’s license were handed over to Talai police station, the pen drive was withheld by Sharma, raising further questions about a cover-up.

The agency suspects the involvement of more police officials from Sadar station, including the SHO and the station’s munshi, who may have destroyed key case documents. Their arrests could potentially expose the “mastermind” behind the alleged cover-up.

The investigation has also highlighted internal conflict within the state police, with contradictory reports filed by the DGP and Shimla SP, which ultimately forced the High Court to transfer the case to the CBI.

With the probe zeroing in on higher functionaries, the Vimal Negi case threatens to trigger a major political storm in Himachal Pradesh. Observers believe the scandal could dent the image of the ruling Congress government as more explosive details emerge.
