CBI court sentences ex-village pradhan to 10 years jail for Rs 1 crore fraud

New Delhi, Dec 12 (UNI) A special CBI court on Thursday sentenced two people to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for defrauding the government exchequer of over Rs one crore, the agency confirmed on Friday.

The convicted individuals are Satya Narayan Prasad Patel, the then village pradhan; and Shahnawaj Alam, the then fair price shopkeeper (Kotedar). The court also imposed a total fine of Rs 55,000 on them.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered the case in 2008, taking it over from PS Narhi in Ballia district, against 172 accused persons. It was alleged that the accused caused a wrongful loss of Rs 65 lakh in cash and food grains worth Rs 45.26 lakh to the government by cheating, fraud, and preparing forged documents under the Sampurna Grameen Rozgar Yojna (SGRY), gaining for themselves correspondingly.

The CBI filed a charge sheet in 2010 against Satyendra Singh Gangwar, the then Chief Finance & Accounts Officer of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) in Ballia, along with Patel and Alam.

Following the trial, the court convicted and sentenced Patel and Alam. However, it acquitted Satyendra Singh Gangwar of all charges.
