Calcutta HC seeks police report on Jadavpur University trouble by Mar 12

Kolkata, Mar 5 (UNI) The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the West Bengal government to file a comprehensive report by March 12 in relation to a violence in the premier institution in Jadavpur University campus during Education Minister Bratya Basu’s visit on Saturday last (March 1), official sources said.

The court also directed the police to file an FIR (first information report) on behalf of an injured student Indranuj Roy today itself.

The bench of single judge Justice Tirthankar Ghosh passed order after hearing contents of an email sent by an injured student, who sustained eye injury after minister’s car allegedly dashed him off whilst Basu was whisked away by his security personnel after being attacked by the Left-wing students, including that of SFI, on Saturday evening.

The injured first-year student of JU, Indranuj Roy, who is now admitted to a private hospital with eye wounds, emailed to the court seeking judicial intervention, sources said.

The judge expressed concerns about potential intelligence failure and the proximity of protesters to the minister, drawing comparisons with violent incidents in a neighboring country.

The judge observed that he did not want people to come close to a minister surrounded by the security personnel like what happened in the neighbouring country.

The advocates, appearing on behalf of the injured student, told the court that the JU and police filed seven FIRs but did not take a single FIR on behalf of the students.

The judge enquired if the intelligence reports were communicated to the minister regarding the presence of the students or the minister listened to them, sources added.

Justice Ghosh expressed seriousness of the situation and observed that “I don’t want this to be an example in the rest of West Bengal.”

He stressed that while public demonstrations are part of democratic expressions, “they should not escalate to the point where they endanger public officials.”
