Bus passengers evacuated after smoke scare in Mumbai

Mumbai, Nov 8 (UNI) Panic briefly gripped passengers onboard a Shivshahi State Transport bus, travelling from Dadar to Pune Station, today evening when the bus had to be evacuated after smoke was detected emerging from its air-conditioning system near Matunga.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, directly opposite Matunga Police Station, when the bus driver noticed smoke coming from the roof-mounted AC unit. Acting swiftly, he brought the vehicle to an immediate halt and ensured all passengers were safely escorted out.

According to officials, approximately 28 passengers were evacuated without injury. Although initial fears suggested a possible fire outbreak, State Transport Department authorities later clarified that no flames were involved, and the situation was caused by smoke emission from the AC mechanism rather than an actual fire.

The unexpected smoke created panic among travellers and pedestrians, but the driver’s quick action prevented the situation from escalating into a serious mishap. Emergency protocols were followed promptly, and no casualties or property damage were reported.

Officials commended the driver’s alert response and calm handling of the incident, noting that his timely decision to stop the vehicle and evacuate passengers averted a potential tragedy on one of central Mumbai’s busiest roads.
