London, July 11 (UNI) A thrilling second day at Lord’s saw England being bowled out for 387 after a spirited lower-order resistance, most notably from Brydon Carse, who struck a career-best 56. Jasprit Bumrah starred with a maiden five-wicket haul at the iconic venue, entering the Lord’s Honours Board in style. In reply, India reached 44/1 in 14 overs at tea, with KL Rahul and Karun Nair steady at the crease.
Resuming at 353/7 after lunch, England added 34 more runs as Carse continued to frustrate the India bowlers. He was given two lives, first when Akash Deep dropped a high slog at deep midwicket, and again when wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel failed to glove a thick edge. Carse capitalised with a towering six down the ground to bring up his maiden Test fifty, and followed it up with crisp boundaries off Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
But the Indian pacers bounced back. Bumrah, already on fire in the morning session, cleaned up Jofra Archer with a superb inswinger that skidded through the gate to claim his first-ever five-wicket haul at Lord’s (5/74), prompting applause and a reluctant but deserved ball raise from the speedster.
Siraj, who had earlier removed Jamie Smith for 51 with a beautiful outswinger caught behind by substitute keeper Jurel (after KL Rahul’s earlier drop), wrapped up the innings by uprooting Carse’s stumps with a pinpoint yorker that tailed in late. Carse’s 56 off 83 balls (6 fours, 1 six) was a vital knock in the context of England’s innings.
Following the innings break, India’s top order began their reply cautiously. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early for 13, caught in the slips, but Rahul (13*) and Nair (18*) ensured no further damage heading into tea.
Gautam Gambhir, India’s new Test head coach, was seen signalling for the heavy roller ahead of India’s innings, hoping to negate any help from the surface for England’s bowlers. With the pitch still offering occasional movement, the next session will be key to determining the tone of India’s reply.
