Alappuzha (Kerala), Aug 5 (UNI) In a tragic incident, a bridge span under construction across the Achankovil River collapsed, causing seven workers to fall into the water, of whom five swam to safety, one died and another remains missing.
The deceased has been identified as Binu, a resident of Kizhakkekkara Vadakke Binu Bhavan, Thrikkunnappuzha, whose body was recovered approximately 50 metres downstream from the construction site yesterday.
Raghav Karthik, of Akshay Bhavan, Kallumala, Mavelikkara, is still missing, and search operations are currently underway to locate him.
The accident occurred at the Keecherikadavu Bridge site, located in the first ward of the Chettikulangara panchayat. Among the five who escaped, Vineesh, a native of Narakathara, Haripad, was rescued by fellow labourers after falling into the river.
The cause of the structural collapse is yet to be determined. Authorities have cordoned off the area, and a detailed investigation has been initiated.
Kerala Public Works Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas described the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and announced that the Vigilance Wing of the Public Works Department has been directed to conduct an urgent inquiry.
“The cause of the accident must be thoroughly examined, and strict action will be taken based on the findings,” the Minister said, adding that a detailed report must be submitted within three days.
