Brazilian cinema shines as ‘The Secret Agent’ bags two golden globes

Los Angeles, Jan 12 (UNI) Brazilian cinema earned global recognition after ‘The Secret Agent’ emerged as a major winner at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva joined the celebrations as the film secured two top honours at the ceremony held Sunday night (local time) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California.

Taking to X, the Brazilian President shared a series of photographs and expressed pride in the international success of Brazilian artists.

“Best Non-English Language Film and Best Drama Actor. A double win for The Secret Agent at the goldenglobes, making history in Brazilian cinema. A day of glory and recognition for the talent of our artists. What an honor it was to receive, in August of last year, part of the film’s cast and production team for a screening at the Cine Alvorada. Janja and I cherish every moment of that extraordinary night in our memory. The doors will always be open to Brazilian art and culture,” Lula wrote.

The Secret Agent won the Golden Globe for Best Non-English Language Film and Best Actor in a Drama Film.

Actor Wagner Moura made history by becoming the first Brazilian performer to win Best Actor in a Drama Film at the Golden Globe Awards. The win marked a milestone in Moura’s career, years after achieving global recognition for his role in Netflix’s Narcos and receiving an earlier Golden Globe nomination.

While accepting the award, Moura spoke about the film’s deeper themes and its message across generations.

“‘The Secret Agent’ is a film about memory, or the lack of memory, and generational trauma. I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too. So this is to the ones that are sticking with their values in difficult moments,” he said, as quoted by Variety.

Set in Brazil in 1977 during the period of military rule, The Secret Agent follows a technology expert and political dissident, played by Moura, as he attempts to escape persecution while resisting an oppressive system. The film is directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho.

The film had earlier received widespread acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, where Moura won Best Actor and Mendonça Filho received the Best Director award. The Secret Agent also claimed the Art House Cinema Award and the FIPRESCI Prize, according to Variety.
