Bihar hooch tragedy: Kharge slams Nitish govt for failing to stop ‘illegal liquor business’

New Delhi, Oct 17 (UNI) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday termed the death of 36 people, due to poisonous liquor in Bihar as extremely ‘painful and sad’ and slammed the Nitish Kumar government for failing to stop ‘illegal liquor business’.

Taking to social media handle X, he said, “So far 36 people have died due to poisonous liquor in 16 villages of Siwan and Saran in Bihar, which is extremely painful and sad.”

“Our deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the victims. We request the government to ensure that the culprits are given the harshest punishment possible,” Kharge said.

Slamming Nitish Kumar for “illegal trade of illicit liquor”, the Congress President said that the Chief Minister in 2017 had said that “Liquor will not be sold in Bihar as long as I am alive”, and ban on liquor was implemented in the state.

“But why is the illegal trade of illicit liquor still going on?” Kharge asked.

“The opportunistic double engine government in Bihar is responsible for taking the lives of hundreds of people!” he said.

Stating that many people have lost their lives due to illegal liquor earlier in other districts, the Congress Chief said this “shows how unsuccessful the Bihar government is in stopping the illegal liquor business”.
