Biennial polls to eight RS seats – two from Assam, six from TN, on June 19

New Delhi, May 26 (UNI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced the election schedule for two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam and six from Tamil Nadu, for which the term of the elected sitting members is ending in June-July.

According to an Election Commission release, the term of the two elected members from Assam will end on June 14, while for the six members from Tamil Nadu it will end on July 24.

The two members retiring from Assam are: Mission Ranjan Das and Birendra Prasad Baishya.

The six members retiring from Tamil Nadu are: Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss (Pattali Makkal Katchi), M. Shanmugam (DMK), N. Chandrasegharan (DMK), M. Mohammed Abdullah (DMK), P. Wilson (DMK) and Vaiko (MDMK).

According to the schedule released by the Election Commission, the notification for the elections will be issued on June 2, and the last date for filing nomination papers is June 9.

The scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place on June 10, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 12.

Polling will be held on June 19 from 9 am to 4 pm.

Counting of votes will be held on the same day, an hour after the polling ends.

The Commission has directed that only violet colour sketch pens of a pre-fixed specification will be used, which will be provided by the Returning Officer. No other pen can be used in the elections, it said.

It also said that adequate measures for close monitoring of the election process by appointing observers shall be taken to ensure free and fair elections.

It added that broad guidelines of Covid-19 may be followed, wherever applicable, during the entire process by all persons.
