Bhopal’s tribal families battle eviction

Decades-old settlement under threat

Bhopal: A storm of protest has erupted in the heart of Madhya Pradesh’s capital as 27 tribal families residing behind Manas Bhawan face an imminent threat of homelessness. For over 40 years, these families have called this patch of land home, but a recent eviction notice from the District Collector has turned their world upside down. On Thursday, the streets witnessed emotional scenes as women, elders, and young children sat in protest, demanding a halt to the administration’s “encroachment” drive.

= The conflict: Forest land vs. ancestral claims

The administration maintains that the land in question belongs to the Forest Department and is categorized as a reserved area. Officials state that the notices were issued to clear unauthorized occupations on government property. However, the residents counter this claim, asserting that they have lived and worked as laborers on this site for four decades. They argue that being uprooted without warning or an alternative housing plan is a violation of their basic rights.

= Political backing for the displaced

The protest has gained significant momentum with the support of former minister PC Sharma and Congress leaders. Standing in solidarity with the families, Sharma condemned the move, urging the government to grant ownership rights to the long-term residents instead of displacing them. The opposition has demanded that no family be moved until a proper rehabilitation and resettlement plan is finalized.
