Bhopal: A celebration turned into a nightmare on New Year’s Eve when 20-year-old Jatin Pathak was brutally assaulted with sticks following a dispute over bursting crackers. After fighting for his life for five days, Jatin succumbed to severe head injuries on Monday, sparking widespread outrage and protests in the Kamala Nagar area.

The case has drawn intense scrutiny as the victim’s family named Prakash Malviya, the husband of a local policewoman, as a key assailant. Disturbing mobile footage captured the assault, showing Jatin collapsing while attackers continued to rain blows upon him. Following a tense “Chakka Jam” protest by grieving relatives, the police officially arrested five suspects and upgraded the charges to murder.

= Inquiry into police involvement

The victim’s family alleges that the woman constable was present during the attack and actively participated. Responding to these grave accusations, ACP Ankita Khatarkar confirmed that the department is investigating the role of the policewoman. “If her involvement is established, strict disciplinary and legal action will be initiated,” officials stated. Additional force has been deployed in Ambedkar Nagar to maintain peace as the investigation proceeds.
