Bhopal: Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) has achieved a significant surgical milestone, successfully completing three highly complex and high-risk cancer surgeries within a single week. The procedures, led by Assistant Professor Dr. Sonveer Gautam and his team, included removing a massive neck tumor close to a major artery, excising a rare endocrine tumor from the pancreas, and reconstructing facial bone after cancer removal. All three patients, treated free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, have been discharged and are recovering well. The director-in-charge, Dr. Manisha Srivastava, hailed the success as proof of the hospital’s advanced expertise, aiming to make world-class cancer treatment accessible in Central India.
Giant Neck Tumor Near Brain Artery Removed
The team tackled the complicated case of an 18-year-old with a large Cystic Hygroma that had fused with over half of the Carotid Artery (the main blood supply to the brain). Previously denied surgery elsewhere due to the high risks of stroke or paralysis, Dr. Gautam, alongside Neurosurgeon Dr. Saurabh Dixit, meticulously separated the 15×10 cm tumor using micro-surgical techniques, ensuring the artery and vital Parotid Gland were safely preserved.
High-Risk Pancreatic Endocrine Tumor Excised
A 40-year-old woman suffering from a rare Pancreatic Endocrine Tumor presented a formidable challenge due to dangerous blood pressure swings (ranging from 70 to over 200 mmHg) during the operation, threatening cardiac arrest. With support from Professor Dr. Sarika Katiyar of the Anaesthesia Department, Dr. Gautam successfully removed the tumor—which was stuck to the duodenum and a major vein—using specialized techniques to spare the pancreas from further complex surgery.
Facial Reconstruction after Maxillary Sinus Cancer
The final case involved a 50-year-old woman with advanced Maxillary Sinus Cancer that had spread to the bone beneath her eye. The BMHRC team not only removed the tumor but also performed a complex reconstruction. They used a piece of the patient’s own hip bone (iliac bone) to rebuild the maxillary bone and utilized a temporal muscle flap to maintain facial symmetry, successfully preserving both her vision and facial structure.

Director’s Quote (Dr. Manisha Srivastava):
BMHRC consistently achieves successful treatment for the most complex cancer cases through advanced surgical techniques and multi-disciplinary expertise. The success of these three surgeries is proof of our doctors’ commitment, proficiency, and the institute’s cutting-edge facilities. Our goal is to make world-class cancer care accessible right here in Central India.
