BHEL Marks World Environment Day with Miyawaki Plantation Drive

Bhopal: As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, BHEL Bhopal planted 1,000 saplings today at Jamburi Maidan, Piplani using the Miyawaki method, marking the third phase of its urban afforestation initiative. The drive coincided with World Environment Day and was led by Shri Pradeep Kumar Upadhyay, General Manager & Unit Head, along with senior officials, TAC members, and departments from horticulture, civil, and electrical divisions.

This green space is being developed into an Urban Forest (Oxygen Bank / Intensive Pranavayu Area) to enhance local biodiversity and air quality. Over the past two years, BHEL has already planted 20,625 saplings through this method, with remarkable growth results.

The plantation is a collaborative effort between BHEL Bhopal and State Bank, with technical guidance from Dr. Pankaj Bharti. The Miyawaki technique, pioneered by Japanese botanist Prof. Akira Miyawaki, involves planting native species densely to simulate a natural forest, promoting rapid growth and biodiversity restoration—particularly beneficial in urban environments.

In FY 2025–26, BHEL aims to plant 60,000 saplings, including 40,000 using the Miyawaki technique in partnership with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). A detailed roadmap shows 23,600 saplings planted in FY 2023–24 and 59,007 in FY 2024–25, including 625 by Miyawaki.

To conclude the event, Shri Upadhyay administered an environmental pledge, reaffirming BHEL’s vision for a greener, healthier future.
