BCCI announces election date for new secy, treasurer

Mumbai, Dec 21 (UNI) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Saturday that a Special General Meeting (SGM) will be held in Mumbai on January 12, 2025, with the primary agenda being the election of new office-bearers for the vacant positions of secretary and treasurer.

The need for these election arose following the resignation of BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who was appointed as the Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC), a position that prohibits affiliation with any member association.

Similarly, treasurer Ashish Shelar stepped down after being inducted into the Maharashtra Government, as BCCI’s constitution bars office-bearers from holding government roles.

In the wake of Shah’s resignation, Devajit Saikia was appointed interim secretary by BCCI president Roger Binny, who invoked special powers under Article 7.2(d) of the BCCI constitution to delegate the duties. However, no interim appointment has been made for the treasurer’s role.

BCCI Electoral Officer AK Joti has outlined the election schedule, with nominations for both posts to be accepted on January 3 and 4, 2025. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on January 6, and candidates can withdraw by January 7. The final list of candidates will be announced at 5 pm on January 7, with the election and results set for January 12.

The SGM will be pivotal in filling the vacancies left by Shah and Shelar, and the election of new office-bearers is expected to play a significant role in the BCCI’s governance for the upcoming term.
