BCB issues show-cause notice to director amid BPL boycott

Dhaka, Jan 15 (UNI) The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday issued a show cause notice to director M Najmul Islam over derogatory remarks amid Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) boycott threat, according to a report by The Daily Star.

In a press release, the BCB said “formal disciplinary proceedings” had been initiated against the director and that he had been asked to submit a written explanation within 48 hours.

“As a constitutional body, the BCB is duty-bound to address such matters strictly in accordance with its established rules, regulations, and professional guidelines. In line with this responsibility, the Board has already initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against the Board member concerned. A show-cause letter has been issued,” the release stated.

The board also appealed to players to ensure the smooth running of the ongoing BPL, stressing their importance to the tournament.

“The BCB firmly believes that the players are the main stakeholders and the lifeblood of the BPL and of all cricketing activities under the Board. The Board sincerely hopes that the cricketers will continue to demonstrate their professionalism and commitment by supporting the successful completion of the tournament,” the statement added.

The development came amid a standoff between the board and the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), which on Wednesday night reiterated its ultimatum demanding Najmul’s resignation.

CWAB had warned that players would refrain from all cricketing activities if the director failed to step down before Friday’s scheduled BPL matches.

With no resignation forthcoming, the situation remained unresolved. The BPL fixture between Chattogram Royals and Noakhali Express, scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, was thrown into doubt as players had not arrived at the venue even an hour before the scheduled start, The Daily Star reported.
