Baramulla erupts in celebration as Auqib Nabi bags Rs 8.40 cr IPL deal

Srinagar, (UNI) Celebrations erupted across Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday after local fast bowler Auqib Nabi, 28, was picked up by Delhi Capitals for a whopping Rs 8.40 crore at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, with leaders including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah congratulating the young cricketer on his historic achievement.
The announcement of Nabi’s name at the auction triggered scenes of jubilation at his ancestral home in Sheeri, Baramulla, where family members distributed sweets, embraced one another and offered prayers. Celebrations were also held in Baramulla town as the news spread, with locals thronging the streets to share the moment of pride.
In Sheeri, festivities continued well into the night despite the biting cold. Firecrackers were burst, slogans were raised in praise of the young pacer and drums were beaten by youngsters to express their joy. Many residents garlanded Auqib’s father, Ghulam Nabi, a school teacher, as the entire locality turned into a celebratory venue.
Auqib Nabi made his Ranji Trophy debut for Jammu and Kashmir in 2020 and rose to prominence with his impressive performances in domestic cricket. His breakthrough moment came last season when he dismantled Mumbai’s star-studded batting line-up, claiming the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube in a Ranji Trophy match, bringing him into the national spotlight.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah congratulated Auqib on his remarkable achievement, calling it a proud moment for Jammu and Kashmir.
“We are all very proud of him & I’m pleased that his hard work has been rewarded. Now we wait for the season to start so we can celebrate Auqib’s successes. Speaking for myself, I’m now a DelhiCapitals supporter & can’t wait to cheer them on from the sidelines,” Omar said on X.
Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Karra termed it a “historic accomplishment.”
“It is a matter of immense pride not only for Auqib and his family, but for the entire youth of Jammu and Kashmir. His dedication, discipline, and hard work have truly paid off, proving that talent from our region can shine on the biggest national and international platforms,” Karra said.
PDP legislator Waheed Parra also hailed the feat, calling it a proud moment for the entire union Territory.
“Auqib Nabi, son of the soil, makes it big with a Rs 8.4 Cr IPL contract, a proof of raw talent from J&K. Handholding and the right direction are key; we have no shortage of talent. Sports has always remained a priority, and such achievements reaffirm our commitment to nurturing the talent,” he said on X.
