Bangladeshi smuggler killed, BSF jawan injured in Tripura border

Agartala, Mar 1 (UNI) A Bangladeshi smuggler was killed, and a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan sustained serious injuries in a violent clash along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Sepahijala on Friday night, an official said.

BSF claimed the on duty jawans had to open fire when the smugglers pelted stones targeting them during an attempt to smuggle sugar to Bangladesh in the darkness.

The deceased identified as Alamin, resident of Putia village of Comilla district in Bangladesh. His bullet riddled body was recovered inside border. He was taken to Bishalgarh sub-divisional hospital, where the attending medical officer declared him dead.

With all formalities, and hoisting a flag meeting, BSF is scheduled to hand over the body to the deceased’s family on Saturday, police said.

According to police, a group of Bangladeshi smugglers attacked BSF patrol party at Sonamura border, which left a jawan injured when BSF tried to prevented the smuggling attempt.

At around 7.30 pm, BSF jawans posted at Putia village noticed a smuggling attempt by a group of 20 to 25 Bangladeshi smugglers and they intruded into the Indian side. When alerted by a BSF patrol party, they attacked the party, in which one BSF jawan got seriously injured.

Subsequently, again the party was attacked and miscreants tried to snatch BSF personnel’s weapons and in order to protect his own life, a BSF jawan fired one round of PAG (non lethal) for self defense, resulting the death of Alamin.

Allegedly, after the incident, all Bangladeshi miscreants escaped to their country in presence of Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB). The incident sparked tension along the border and BSF made extra deployment to maintain peace.
