- Victim’s family opposed bail
Bhopal: A local court on Thursday granted bail to accused builder Nitin Mulani, who was arrested for allegedly running over a Class 12 student with his Fortuner SUV near the Polytechnic petrol pump on Wednesday evening. Mulani was produced before the court of JMFC Harsha Parmar, where the victim’s family strongly opposed the bail plea.
The deceased student’s lawyer accused the police of filing an FIR under weaker sections, demanding that harsher hit-and-run charges be added. They urged the court to send the accused to jail, contending that the nature of the collision warranted stricter action.
Defence counsel Vijay Chaudhary argued that Mulani did not flee immediately after the accident. Instead, he alleged that Mulani was attacked by bystanders and had to escape to protect himself, maintaining that the case does not qualify as a hit-and-run.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted bail.
The accident claimed the life of 18-year-old Atif, a resident of Tallaiya, who was returning home after buying medicines for his ailing father. Eyewitnesses said the speeding Fortuner hit his scooter from behind with such force that Atif was thrown onto the road and fatally crushed. The car is registered to Bhojpal Builders, owned by Mulani’s family.
