Ayan Mukerji bows out of ‘Dhoom 4’, to focus on ‘Brahmastra: Part Two – Dev’

New Delhi, Oct 21 (UNI) Filmmaker Ayan Mukerji has reportedly exited Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) highly anticipated action franchise Dhoom 4 due to creative differences, choosing instead to focus on expanding his Brahmastra universe.

According to media reports, the Brahmastra director — who was in advanced talks to helm Dhoom 4, rumoured to star Ranbir Kapoor — decided to walk away after his creative vision did not align with the film’s direction.

A source quoted by the outlet revealed that Mukerji “didn’t have much say in the screenplay and didn’t want to embark on another journey of just execution.” The script for Dhoom 4 has reportedly been written by Shridhar Raghavan, while Ayan was primarily expected to direct based on a pre-defined concept.

“Ayan believes that films like War 2 and Dhoom 4 were never meant for him. He wants to make movies that blend spectacle with romance, drama, and storytelling,” the source added.

Before finalizing his decision, Mukerji is said to have had multiple discussions with Aditya Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor, both of whom were reportedly understanding and supportive. Sources have described the filmmaker’s exit as completely amicable.

Following his departure, Ayan has shifted his focus to his long-term passion project — the Astraverse. He is currently developing Brahmastra: Part Two – Dev, the sequel to the 2022 fantasy blockbuster. The film, originally expected to begin shooting earlier, will likely go on floors in 2026.

Meanwhile, Yash Raj Films plans to continue with Dhoom 4 under the same banner, possibly bringing in an in-house director to take over. While earlier reports suggested that Ranbir Kapoor had already allotted dates for the project, insiders now hint that the studio might reconsider the casting and explore a new lead altogether.
