Axar accords quick decision-making for T20 success

Kolkata, Jan 20 (UNI) Axar Patel, India vice-captain, emphasised the critical importance of quick decision-making in T20 cricket, recognising the fast-paced nature of the format that demands immediate and effective choices during high-pressure moments.

Speaking to the press on Monday ahead of India-England T20 series, Axar highlighted how the T20I format requires players to be agile in their thinking, especially when it comes to batting strategies.

“In T20Is, decisions must be made swiftly, whether it’s about who steps in at a particular moment or how to approach the match situation,” he remarked.

This focus on decision-making under pressure is reflected in the team’s approach to their batting lineup. Axar revealed that, while the openers remain fixed, the middle-order batsmen from Nos. 3 to 7 have been given the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions.

“We’ve spoken about how the middle order can float depending on when we need to come in or even finish the game,” he added.

Axar also shared insights into his role within the leadership group, working closely with Suryakumar Yadav and fellow team members to make split-second decisions that could change the course of the game.

“There’s no time to dwell, you need to take the call quickly,” he said, adding that conversations with the coaching staff have revolved around enhancing this decision-making process.

With the 2025 T20 World Cup looming, Axar stressed that building momentum is key, as the team looks to carry forward the positive momentum from a strong 2024.

“We want to ensure that we start this year strong, and we’re building on what worked for us in the past,” he said.

Axar concluded by acknowledging the ongoing transition in the team, noting that ultimately, decisions regarding player transitions would be made by the selectors and captain.
