Ashwin invests in American Gambit for GCL India

Bengaluru, Nov 6 (UNI) Cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has stepped into the world of professional chess as an investor in the American Gambit franchise, ahead of the third season of the Global Chess League (GCL), scheduled in India from December 13 to 24.

Ashwin, known for his strategic acumen on the cricket field, brings the same passion and analytical mindset to chess, reflecting his long-standing love for the game.

“Ashwin’s love for chess made the decision to invest very easy. He actively engages with the sport online and participates in office tournaments,” said Prachura PP, owner of American Gambit. “His presence complements professional players and adds a unique blend of celebrity and sportsmanship for fans.”

Ashwin, though primarily a cricketer, has often showcased his enthusiasm for chess on social media, posting about his online games and sharing insights.

Sources close to the franchise said that discussions with him took just minutes, highlighting his genuine interest in supporting and promoting the sport in India.

The American Gambit franchise, based in Bengaluru but representing the Americas region in the global league, will field a strong team including world number two Hikaru Nakamura.

While India’s world number four player, Arjun Erigaisi, could not be included due to budget constraints, Prachura emphasized that the team is structured for optimal performance, balancing international and Indian talent across categories such as icons, superstars, women, and prodigies.

The third season of the GCL marks its largest yet, returning to India after previous seasons in Dubai and London. Iconic business leaders, including Anand Mahindra, are personally overseeing the league, ensuring a world-class experience for players and fans alike.

“With Ashwin’s involvement and the presence of top international players, this season promises to be historic,” Prachura said.

Fyres, a leading investment and trading brand, has joined as a long-term partner of American Gambit, describing the collaboration as a “marriage” between trading and chess.

“Chess fits perfectly into our mental athlete ecosystem. The overlap between traders and chess enthusiasts is significant. This partnership allows us to engage our community while aligning with our brand values,” a Fyers spokesperson said. The brand plans to leverage chess through live events, content creation, community-building, and long-term brand integration.

Prachura highlighted that India’s chess scene is at an all-time high, with world champions and gold medal-winning teams at international competitions. Brands investing in the sport now are strategically positioning themselves in one of India’s fastest-growing intellectual sports.

“The convergence of chess, trading, and celebrity influence like Ashwin’s is creating a unique opportunity for fans and investors alike,” he said.

As the Global Chess League gears up for its third season in Mumbai, Ashwin’s involvement is expected to attract new audiences, strengthen fan engagement, and raise the profile of professional chess in India, reinforcing its trajectory as a mainstream and commercially viable sport.
