Kurnool, Oct 24 (UNI) In a ghastly road accident, 20 passengers, travelling in a private travel bus, were charred alive when the bus caught fire after hitting a motorcycle at Chinnatekur village of Kallurumandal in the district in the wee hours on Friday.
Police said that 38 passengers were travelling in the Kaveritravels sleeper coach bus, which was going to Bangalore from Hyderabad.
The bus hit a motorcycle, and the bike damaged the oil tank of the bus, resulting in flames erupting.
As per the reports received so far, 20 passengers were charred alive, and 11 bodies have been identified. Most of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition.
However, 19 passengers escaped safely. The accident took place between 3:30 and 4 am. All the bodies were extricated from the bus and the officials were trying to identify the deceased. Some of the injured were admitted to the GGH in Kunrool. The bikerider was also among the dead.
Top officials, including district collector, IGP and SP rushed to the place and monitored the situation.
Chief Minister N Chandrabau Naidu expressed shock and grief over the incident and spoke to the district officials.
