Andreeva eases past Bouzkova at Australian Open

Melbourne, Jan 12 (UNI) Russia’s 17-year-old tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva showcased both her tactical brilliance and endearing personality as she secured a straight-sets victory over Marie Bouzkova in the first round of the Australian Open 2025 on Sunday.

The teenager won 6-3, 6-3, navigating a challenging opponent and rainy conditions at Melbourne Park.

Andreeva, mentored by former Wimbledon champion and Grand Slam-winning coach Conchita Martinez, credited her coach for fostering a balanced atmosphere in her team.

Andreeva has been a player to watch since her breakthrough performances last year, when she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and later became the youngest Grand Slam semifinalist in over two decades at Roland Garros.

Often compared to Martina Hingis for her strategic gameplay, Andreeva is working on becoming more aggressive, particularly at the net.

Facing the world No.46 Bouzkova for the first time, Andreeva encountered stiff resistance, particularly in the second set. A key turning point came in the seventh game of the first set when Andreeva broke Bouzkova’s serve, moments before rain forced the roof to close.

The second set saw gruelling exchanges, including a 25-shot rally that pushed both players to their limits. Andreeva ultimately broke serve again at a critical juncture to seal the win in 90 minutes. She will next face either Poland’s Magda Linette or Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in the second round.
