Kolkata, Nov 10 (UNI) Acclaimed filmmaker Ramesh Sharma on Monday took pot shots at the West, particularly America, saying while the US was “above law”, the occidental nations did not always abide by ethics despite dictating the moral compass of the world.
“America is above law”, Sharma said while discussing his latest documentary, “A Chronicle of the Forgotten Genocide: The Kissinger Doctrine” at the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival.
The film turns the spotlight back on the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, a conflict that left millions dead and displaced, while the world largely looked the other way.
Sharma’s film interrogates the moral hypocrisy of world powers, particularly the United States under Richard Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, whose geopolitical ambitions during the Cold War overshadowed a humanitarian catastrophe.
“When ordinary people were dying, America chose politics over humanity. America shakes hands with dictators, religious fundamentalists, there is strategy before principles,” said Sharma.
He further underscored, “The West dictates the moral compass of the world. But how funny they don’t abide by ethics but the rest of the world blindly accepts it”.
Addressing a packed session, Sharma described the film as a cinematic reminder of “the world’s collective amnesia” regarding the atrocities committed during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
Interweaving archival footage with testimonies of survivors and political analysts, the filmmaker reflected on the enduring impact of the conflict. “The scars of 1971 extend beyond Bangladesh. They live on across South Asia, proof that when the powerful write history, the suffering of the powerless fades into silence.”
In his interactive session, Sharma noted that the film is not merely an act of remembrance but of responsibility.
