All samples from Delhi Zoo found negative for H5N1 Avian influenza virus: Environment Min

New Delhi, Sept 15 (UNI) The Environment Ministry today said test results of all the samples collected from the Delhi Zoo since September 1 have been found to be negative for H5N1 Avian Influenza.

No new cases of water bird mortality or symptoms suggestive of avian influenza in other zoo animals have been reported, it said.

However, treading cautiously, the Delhi Zoo will remain closed for visitors until further notice, the Ministry said in a statement. It will be reopened based on existing protocols and guidelines, said the Ministry.

The Delhi zoo which was placed under enhanced surveillance earlier this month following the death of water birds—some of whom tested positive for the H5N1 virus—has since implemented intensive sanitation and bio-security measures. These are aimed at safeguarding the health of birds, mammals, and staff members.

“No new mortality among water birds or migratory birds has been reported since September 1,” the Ministry said, adding that no mammals have tested positive for the virus and that no other animals in the zoo have shown any influenza-like symptoms.

While the situation appears to be stabilising, officials emphasised that continued observation is essential, especially as avian influenza viruses can persist in the environment for extended periods. A 25-kilometre surveillance zone around the zoo remains under watch, and no further mortalities have been observed in the area so far.
